Basic Literacy
Learners enroll in the Peninsula READS Basic Literacy program for a variety of reasons. Their future goals may include obtaining a General Education Development certificate (GED), joining the military, or going to college. Some learners are seeking to increase employment opportunities or to obtain job promotion. Other learners want to enhance every day survival skills, to understand written medical instructions, file insurance claims or complete tax forms. Learners may just want to enjoy reading to their children, or reading the Bible and the newspaper for themselves. Learners at Peninsula READS do have one thing in common: the need to increase their literacy skills to progress toward their goals.
Basic Literacy learners are given an initial assessment using the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) to determine a baseline from which to begin to target these goals. A $20.00 testing fee is required. All services after testing are free to the learner. Trained volunteer tutors are matched with students, and regular meetings are then scheduled in a public place on days and times convenient to both. Peninsula READS’ facilities and public libraries are recommended for tutoring sessions. Periodically, learners are re-tested to identify any challenges in the learning process and to ensure that progress is being made toward the learner’s objective.
Whatever the stated goal, Peninsula READS is committed to linking each enrolled learner with a trained volunteer whose task is to help him develop competence in reading, writing and/or math: The first step in advancing toward his goal.
Learners who have special needs or have received a special education certificate must bring proof of that certification. Eligibility will be determined based on the type of need and the capability of our volunteer staff to address those needs without specialized professional training.
